Holistic bio-dentistry

Biological dentistry

The biological dentistry is based on the use of the body's self-healing capacity, using either none or minimal foreign materials in dental treatments. To repair the lost tissues due to infection or trauma in the mouth, the use of autogenous tissues is the healthiest and most biological approach. When these autogenous tissues are not used, materials that are most compatible with body´s biology should be preferred to repair the lost tissues.

Amalgam

Amalgam fillings have been used in dentistry for many years, due to their malleable nature and high success rate.

However, there is growing concern over the mercury content of amalgam, along with its poor aesthetic and risk of corrosion. Although the link is not conclusive, it has been suggested that mercury within amalgam fillings could be responsible for the development of certain diseases. For these reasons, many patients wish to have their amalgam fillings removed and replaced with a safer, tooth colored material.

Amalgam Filling Removal

For patients with amalgam fillings, a small amount of mercury vapor is released during activities such as chewing, tooth brushing and tooth grinding.

However, when an amalgam filling is removed, increased levels of mercury vapor are released into the air, increasing the risk of inhalation by the patient, the clinician and surrounding personnel. For this reason, a special protocol is applied when removing amalgam fillings.

Amalgam fillings that are fractured, corroded or leaking should be replaced. If a patient wishes an amalgam filling to be removed due to health risk factors, this should also be considered.

Ceramics in dental restorations

Ceramic materials are the most aesthetic material to use in dental restorations, thanks to their light transmission properties. They vary in thickness and therefore certain ceramics are appropriate in different applications.

Porcelain

Porcelain is a highly aesthetic, thin material with excellent light transmission properties. For this reason, it is used in highly aesthetic areas, such as single-tooth veneers and onlays or inlays.

Zirconia

Zirconia, although it contains metal ions, is another dental ceramic. It is a tooth-colored and durable material. This makes it an excellent material to use in multi-unit aesthetic restorations, such as dental bridges and implant crowns. Due to its durability, it can also be used to replace traditionally metal restorations (such as the metal wing of a dental bridge).

Bio HPP Restorations

BioHPP is a thermoplastic polymer with excellent strength and durability. Recently, it has been to produce lightweight full-mouth implant-based restorations. It also has improved flexibility and elasticity, which ensures patients are able to chew as if using their natural dentition.

Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) application

PRF contains growth cells derived from our own blood. It is the process used to promote the formation of new tissue without needing to use a biologically foreign material. For example, after tooth extraction, PRF application can be introduced into the extraction site to create additional bone and gum formation to promote healing and repair.

Autogenous Grafts | Biological Tissue Repair

An autogenous graft is a piece of tissue taken from the patient. It is used to repair certain defects, such as a bone graft, or gingival tissue graft.

Dental material allergies

Metal allergy

Some patients may report an allergy to certain metals, such as nickel. Many dental materials contain metal and metal alloys. However, we use many non-allergenic metals with high biocompatibility, reducing the risk of an allergic reaction. These bio-compatible materials include zirconium in dental implants and glass ceramics in aesthetic dentistry.

Impression material allergy

Although very rare, an allergy may develop against the polyether impression material used for taking impressions for a prosthesis. However, all of our impressions are taken using a 3D digital scanner.

Acrylic allergy

Some patients may have an acrylic allergy. Acrylic is often use in upper dentures. In such cases, materials that can be prepared with thermopress technology as an alternative to acrylic.
